“One of the things that really attracted me to being on the board of the Kootenay Carshare was how the Carshare can reduce the cost of living for residents of the Kootenays.  In an era where the cost of living seems to be perpetually rising, car sharing emerges as a beacon of financial relief. This approach to transportation not only alleviates the burden of car ownership but also fosters a sense of community and environmental stewardship.

The hidden costs of vehicle ownership are often overlooked, yet they can drain one’s finances significantly. Depreciation is the silent thief of value, with a new car losing up to 20-30% of its value in the first year alone, and continuing to depreciate thereafter. Maintenance, while necessary, adds a steady stream of expenses, from routine oil changes to tire replacements and brake repairs. Moreover, unexpected events like collisions can lead to costly repairs and increased insurance premiums, not to mention the stress and inconvenience they cause.

Car sharing offers a solution to these financial woes. By sharing vehicles, individuals can split the costs associated with maintenance, depreciation and insurance. This model promotes the efficient use of resources, as cars are utilized by multiple people rather than sitting idle in driveways.  For me, car sharing stands out as a practical and economical alternative to individual car ownership, especially as a replacement to a second household vehicle. It presents a pathway to reducing the financial strain of transportation, while also contributing to a greener, more connected community.
